DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Lifting the Lid on Menwith Hill: The US Spy Base i
 n Yorkshire</strong></p>\n<p>Yorkshire CND are launching a new report th
 at exposes the role of US spy base Menwith Hill in global conflict and t
 he illegal monitoring and analysis of communications carried out there. 
 It sheds light on the work of the US base run by the National Security A
 gency (NSA) under an informal and secretive lease agreement with the UK 
 Government.</p>\n<p>This is the first report of its kind that investigat
 es the role of Menwith Hill since the European Parliament resolved that 
 the electronic surveillance breached the European Convention of Human Ri
 ghts in 2001.</p>\n<p>The report covers:</p>\n<ul>\n<li> Menwith Hill's 
 strategic role as a regional intelligence base<strong> <i>illegally coll
 ecting and analysing information from satellites\, phone tapping and the
  interception of internet traffic</i></strong></li>\n<li>The role that M
 enwith Hill plays in <i><strong>information-led warfare</strong></i> for
  US military actions such as drone attacks </li>\n<li>A critical examina
 tion of claims made by the US authorities\, and repeated in Parliament\,
  of the economic benefit of the base to the local community </li>\n<li>T
 he hidden economic costs of the base and the degree to which these are s
 ubsidised by the UK taxpayer</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The launch event will inclu
 de a presentation from the report author Dr Steve Schofield followed by 
 a discussion on the impact of the base.</p>\n<p>More information on Menw
