DESCRIPTION:<p>Opencast coal mining in the Douglas Valley is about the ru
ling class destroying communities for their own financial gain. Its abou
t ecological destruction on a massive scale for capitalism's unquenchabl
e thirst for cheap energy. Its about absentee fat-cat land-lords making
millions off land that shouldn't be theirs. Its about morally corrupt lo
cal (and national) government putting profit before people. Join us 12-1
8 July in the Douglas Valley\, South Lanarkshire\, to build on 20 years
of community struggle and four years of direct action against the UK's b
iggest opencast mining company. It's time to Take Back the Land!</p>\n<p
 >Take Back the Land! will be a space for taking action\, sharing skills
and learning through doing. It will be a welcoming and safe space for al
l those wishing to challenge the social injustice and environmental dest
ruction caused by opencast coal mining operations in Scotland and throug
hout the world.</p>\n<p>Building on previous years experience at camps s
uch as the Mainshill Solidarity Camp\, the Happendon Wood Action Camp an
d events such as the Outdoor Skillshares\, we will be establishing a bas
e for a week of high impact action and low impact\, sustainable living.<
/p>\n<p>In solidarity with the communities of the Douglas Valley\, we wi
ll be directly confronting the power structures and infrastructures whic
h have dominated and scarred the valley for too long with a mass action
planned for the 14th July and plenty of room for skilling up\, recruitme
nt and affinity group actions to be taken.</p>\n<p>The camp location wil
l be announced nearer to the time\, but will be in close proximity to ma
ny of the opencast coal mines in the area.</p>\n<p>Whilst we recognise t
he camp to be a space to take action against external oppression we also
hope a create a space which challenges socialised behaviours that oppre
ss and exclude others and we will try and make the camp as inclusive a s
pace as possible\, for all people wishing to be involved.</p>\n<p>We are
calling for all those wishing to take or support actions in solidarity
with community self determination\, against destructive fossil fuel indu
stries and towards a more sustainable and just society\, to come to Sout
h Lanarkshire from 12-18th July and help Take Back the Land!</p>\n<p>Mor
e updates are on their way. If you wish to find out more information or
contact us for any reason please get in touch: contact@coalactionscotlan

DESCRIPTION:<p>Hello (deleted)\,</p>\n<p>I met you at the rally in Exhibi
tion Park today\, where you expressed interest in our cause. As I didn't
have time to explain our situation fully\, I've attached a brief summar
y of the events of the last twelve months<br />This month sees the first
anniversary of the unfair dismissal by AEI management of one hundred an
d twenty six long term employees\, and we hope to mark the occasion with
a short march from our weekly meeting place in Barlow Mow village hall\
, to a public space opposite AEI Cables where we plan to hold a demonstr
ation to bring attention and win publicity for our case. The march will
start at 12:30 on Thursday 24th May\, and we hope to remain outside the
factory gates while the afternoon shift arrives and the morning shift de
parts (roughly 1:30 to 2:15). We would like to ask and invite you and an
y of your colleagues to come along\, join us and lend your help and supp
ort to our cause on the day.</p>\n<p>Yours\,</p>\n<p>(deleted)<br />on b
ehalf of the Shafted by AEI committee</p>\n<p>AEI Cables Ltd is an elect
ric cable manufacturer\, one of the major employers in the town of Birtl
ey\, Tyne and Wear. The company was established in 1929 and opened on it
's present site in 1950. It was taken over by Paramount Communications L
td of India in 2007.</p>\n<p>On Thursday\, 26th May 2011\, AEI Cables Lt
d informed the workforce of their intention to announce around one hundr
ed redundancies\, to claim insolvency and to apply for a Company Volunta
ry Arrangement.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;On Friday 27th May 2011\, without consult
 ation or notice\, commencing at 10 a.m. 126 employees\, most with well o
ver thirty year's service\, were informed\, either in person or by lette
r to their home address\, that their contract had been terminated by AEI
with immediate effect. The first two employees thus terminated were the
GMB union local branch chairman and the union branch secretary. Factory
management later congratulated themselves on local television news for
having saved the remaining 189 jobs in the factory.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;In th
e eight months prior to this announcement\, union representatives had re
peatedly asked why temporary workers employed by AEI were being retained
and trained on key jobs while full time employees were engaged in menia
l tasks such as sweeping up. No answer was forthcoming.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;E
ach individual thus made redundant was informed that\, due to the compan
y's insolvency\, no redundancy payment would be made. Instead redundant
employees were advised to apply to the government Insolvency Service thr
ough Insolvency Practitioners Hacker Young. The taxpayer has thus taken
on the bill for these 126 redundancies as well as for the ninety days st
atutory notice payment these former employees later received. AEI Cables
paid nothing. The amount paid to each redundant employee by the Insolve
ncy Service was the government defined minimum\; enhanced redundancy agr
eements in place at AEI from previous pay and conditions negotiations we
re no longer applicable.</p>\n<p>Twenty-four temporary employees were re
tained at the time of the redundancies. These temporary employees would
have been entitled to no redundancy payment\, yet employees of long serv
ice and decades of experience were chosen for redundancy before these mi
 nimally trained\, far less experienced\, temporary employees.</p>\n<p>Ea
ch person involved appealed against the redundancy and asked what select
ion criteria had been used. The company refused to consider any appeal\,
citing the CVA and the need for swift action to save the company\, and
claiming that the whole process had been carried out in less than sevent
y two hours\, but stating that\, even if correct redundancy procedure ha
d been followed\, those same employees would still have been selected.</
p>\n<p>Local MPs and Union leaders have been approached on several occas
ions since the redundancies took place but continue to show reluctance t
o become involved in the matter\, or to offer other than minimal help or
guidance to the people affected by it</p>\n<p>AEI Cables Ltd is still t
rading\, and continues to take on temporary workers\, performing tasks p
reviously carried out by persons made redundant. During the local news b
roadcast mentioned above\, a temporary worker was shown being trained to
run the machine previously operated by the now redundant GMB union bran
ch chairman.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;Does this mean that any company in this coun
try can now terminate the contract of any of it's employees\, at any tim
e\, without notice or consultation\, and without being liable for any re
dundancy payments and expect the British taxpayer to fund all such payme
nts\, in order to replace those people with workers on temporary contrac
ts\, to be hired and fired at will? Does a&nbsp\;Company Voluntary Arran
gement supersede British Employment Law?&nbsp\; If so\, then have not th
e rights of every employed person in this country been\, at a stroke\, w
 iped away?</p>\n<p><br />(deleted)</p>\n<p>On behalf of the 126 ex-AEI e
 mployees.</p>
