Corporate criminals Tesco had one of their posters improved last weekend to more accurately reflect their attitude to the community of Oakwood, where they are planning a huge expansion to their existing supermarket. The poster (observed at 1800h on Saturday 22nd August 2009 outside Rico's restaurant, Oakwood) had been amended to read, "We want 2 say sod you Oakwood." Their planning application is due to be heard on Thursday 27th.

The plan for the expansion of the Tesco supermarket on Rounday Road has united local small businesses, anti-corporate campaigners and others. Even local MP Fabian Hamilton has jumped on the bandwagon (misleadingly reported as 'leading' the campaign). The campaign website (previously reported on Indymedia) includes some innovative uses of technology, making it easier for people to register an objection without having to reach for pen and paper.
Tesco have countered with some 'innovative' campaigning of their own. In an attempt to influence the planning decision, they canvassed shoppers at their supermarket asking for people to write to the council in support of their planning application. However, some of the letters received by the planning department were faked. Tesco have some explaining to do.
The subvertisement of the poster can be seen as a low-tech escalation in the propaganda war, or it could be seen as a helpful attempt to portray Tesco's intentions more accurately. With their well-established strategies of undercutting local competition by artifically lowering food prices (which they are uniquely placed to do as Britain's largest buyer of produce), providing poor employment conditions and low wages, and accelerating carbon emissions whilst pretending to be 'green', it was surely a simple mistake on their part to have mis-drafted their publicity material to say 'thank you.' The improved 'sod you' sign was clearly more accurate. It seemed that someone else had added their own sentiments on a piece of paper taped to one side: "Kill the small Business man."
Leeds City Council's Planning department, who stand to gain hundreds of thousands of pounds through "section 106" agreements from Tesco, will be hearing the application on Thursday 27th August.
